29-1-10 by Kiyoshi Hamada

Born in 1937 in Kochi, Kiyoshi Hamada graduated from Tama Art University, Tokyo in 1961. Since then, he has consistently exhibited his work in both solo and group shows, as well as art fairs, and he is represented in numerous Japanese and international public collections, including: National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo National Museum in Cracow, Bridgestone Museum of Art, Tochigi Prefectural Museum of Fine Arts, Ueno Royal Museum, Osaka Contemporary Art Center, Museum of Art in Kochi and many more.

This work is an excellent example of the artist’s technique - wooden board painted with hundreds of small dashes which the artist then cuts away, gouging out small flecks to reveal the woodgrain beneath. The result is a beautifully textural undulating wave, evocative of an animal hide or a lichened tree. The natural wood gives the piece a real warmth whilst the patination draws the eye around the work.
