Blue Porcelain Vase by Patrick Nash

Patrick Nash uses the method of coiling to create his unique works incorporating different coloured porcelain. The result is commonly referred to as ‘agate ware’ which has historically been achieved on the potter's wheel. Nash, however, prefers the coiling technique as it produces more varied effects.

The undulating blues of the piece are visible on both the inner and outer surface. The artist has chosen to glaze the inside of the vase, giving it a smooth, polished look, whilst leaving the outside unglazed with a completely different texture. This tension between the two surfaces piques the viewer's curiosity, inviting them to look inside.
